How I Style My Hair: Beach Waves

One of the things I get asked about most is how I style my hair. Waves/curls have been my signature style since I was in high school, and even though sometimes I switch up the curl when my hair gets longer, this strategy works best! I swear by using a titanium wand because it distributes heat well and is less damaging overall. Nume has a lot of great options and usually 30-40% off, so if you are interested in making the switch to titanium, they are my top recommendation!

  1. Start with at least second-day hair if you can. The waves will last longer than on freshly, clean hair. Since mine is 3-4 days in, I am using some dry shampoo.
  2. Split your hair down the middle and section off each side.
  3. Brush out any tangles if need be and use a heat protectant.
  4. Grab about a 1-inch strand and towards the bottom wrap it around one time, holding for about 10 seconds. If you have thinner hair, hold it for about eight max. ALWAYS wrap away from your face, not towards.
  5. Repeat, for the strands towards the back and the pieces that frame your face, you may wrap around the barrel twice. This will add some volume.
  6. If you have any creases on the top of your hair, take a flat iron and just pass it through a few times.
  7. Once all your hair is curled, comb through with your fingers, and fluff the strands.

There you have it! Practice makes perfect, and try to be careful not to burn yourself. Even though I have been doing this for 13 years, I still burn myself sometimes. If you are a beginner and scared about that, most good brands will provide you with a glove. These waves will last me at least 1-2 days, but I will usually touch some pieces each day if I am going to work, or an event. If you try out these tips and it works for you let me know in the comments below.
